Get Ready: New School Bus Lot is Ready (or soon will be)

The permits were long delayed and the confrontations with the Township were many, but past-Prez John Crerand and our superb Maintenance staff have pulled it off. The new school bus parking lot, weather permitting, will be completed in April.  The present lot has been extended and modified. The landscape area serves as the break between the buses and the schoolchildren. Fences need to be put up to direct head-on parking to the fence and new signage will direct traffic. Finally, an exit gate for the buses is needed so that they avoid exiting through Conashaugh’s gate.  The wait has been frustrating, but the conclusion has been (will be) a safe, considerable and needed addition to our community.

SEPTIC MAINTENANCE SAVINGS: MAR. 19

Due to the popularity of the previous discount septic maintenance program offered by Earthcare in November and January, Earthcare has agreed to extend the program once more to Saturday March 19, 2005.If you are interested in having your septic system cleaned and maintained by  Earthcare, contact the CLCA office in person or by phone at (570) 686-4000 and mention that you would like to sign up for septic maintenance on March 19, 2005.
If at least four CLCA households sign up, Earthcare is prepared to offer CLCA customers a significant discount on that day.
If you have any questions regarding Earthcare’s septic maintenance programs or the terms of their discount plan, call Earthcare directly at 1-800-428-6166 and ask to speak with Michael
Farruggia. Septic services are available in peak season (April thru August) but the discount will not be offered during these months. If the septic programs are successful, CLCA Strategic Planning will check out other discount programs, such as propane, etc.

IN MEMORY OF GEORGE DAVENPORT
It is with great sadness we inform you that George Davenport, a former resident of CLCA, has passed away. George and Marie Davenport were very active in our community. George, for many years, was our “head chef” at the grill at the annual CLCA picnics, rain or shine. He always had a big smile and “hello” for everyone. Marie was an indispensable and highly regarded welcome committee of one. We extend our thoughts and heartfelt sympathy to Marie and her family in their time of sorrow. Those who wish to may drop stamped condolence notes at the office and the Communications Committee will address and send them on.

Parties, Parties!! (and More)

Adult Christmas Party
Dec. 14th marked the Second Annual Christmas Party. A good time was had by all! We dined on two3-foot hero sandwiches provided by Ray & Charles’ Deli.  We had salads, appetizers, desserts and a birthday cake made by Doris Weifert to celebrate all who had birthdays in December. Betty Pollack presided over our gift exchange, which was fun and provided everyone with a lot of laughs!

Kids’ Activities
The Recreation Committee, under liaison Nancy Sanchez, has given the youngsters of CLCA rousing fall and early winter spectacles. A hilariously successful and well-attended Halloween party engaged the energy and emotions of 40 active youngsters. Soft drinks & snacks flooded the decorated hall, and ghosts flowed like the unearthly spirits they are. The costume ball was a veritable Disney parade. A rousing Christmas party, though less attended--15 courageous bodies-- spread good cheer as if an army had invaded the Rec Bldg. And the Teens Hang Out Night in January brought together a wild, but safe and subdued group of CLCA teens for an evening they are sure to remember-- and wish to have repeated. 35 sang and danced, ate and snacked.
The company revealed the best and the brightest of CLCA and reassured us of the potential of our fine children. Tomorrow is in good hands. Help, guidance, direction, and good cheer were provided by the following adults who deserve our thanks: Carmen Cruz Ruth Milner, Jennifer Morgan, Rose Lopez, Clarissa Medina, Madeline Cortez, Sarah Negron; and, to D.J. Cisco Morales and his son, J.J., a special thank you for the music that happy feet danced to.

Notes and Noodlings: More Events

Volunteers Needed for Teen Times

CLCA Recreation Committee is looking for some volunteers to run a couple of tournaments for teens this summer.
A three-on-three basketball tournament ( for under 12 and over 12) is one project that needs a couple of organizers and overseers.  A fishing tournament is another event needing leadership.
The idea is that the prizes would be awarded at the CLCA Annual Picnic August 28. f you can lend some leadership to either, call the office at 686-4000 and leave your name. Sign-up sheets are also there for the teen and “tween” participants . Both boys and girls are welcome in both tournaments.

Pool Is Opening; Update Your Badges Now

The CLCA community pool will open in early June. The hope is to staff it for weekends and open for the full weeks as soon as possible.
We’re delighted to report that resident Linda Henry is back as Pool Manager!! Linda managed the pool and staff for a number of years and many residents enjoyed and appreciated her leadership at the summer center of activity.
Badges!!
Now is the time to get your CLCA badges updated for 2004 if you haven’t done so already. You will need them to enter the pool and for other events around Conashaugh Lakes.
Call the office to see if you or members of your family will need new photos taken and make an appointment.

Flea Markets Are in May, July, September

The first CLCA Flea Market of the year will be Saturday and Sunday, May 29 and May 30, at the parking area at the Front Gate.
Residents can bring their own tables and tents  and set up allowing for shopper parking.  The May dates coincide with some other major Flea Markets on Route 739, so we can look forward to heavy traffic.

Some of us are hoping the wonderful “cookie lady” returns this year.  Someone might want to set up a hot coffee stand if the weather is cold and wet, or an iced tea stand if it’s hot!
Future Flea Market dates are July 3 and 4  and September 4 and 5.
Gather your wares. One person’s trash is another’s treasure.

Survey Coming for CLCA Future!
The next mailed edition of the official Conashaugh Courier will carry a survey for property owners to complete.  Please fill it out and mail it to the Office: 4040 Conashaugh Lakes, Milford, PA 18337— or return it to the Office; or to the red CLCA mailbox located outside the Office on the deck or at the blue Matters mailbox at the post office boxes.  The survey response is essential for CLCA’s future.

April Security at the CLCA

Our usual safe community remained safe and quiet during April. Other good news: We have a new Vector Security officer, Gerald Thompson, whose reports reveal him to be alert and professional.

Vector Security has initiated a new form for its officers, which lists all vehicles accessing CLCA property via the visitors' gate: contractors, guests, property owners, and service persons.
The bad news: There is a vulgar kid at the school bus stop, whose name we all know, who throws things at vehicles, has a dirty mouth, and is courageous at a distance: i.e., a coward. If he persists in his uncivil actions, and provokes more complaints from parents, we may shame him by printing his name and his indecent activities.
Fair warning...

NO BIKES...
OR ANY OTHER WHEELS ON THE NEWLY RE-PAVED TENNIS AND
BASKETBALL COURTS.  NEED WE SAY MORE?

Go-Cart , ATV Flags Are Ready

Seven-inch orange flags will be ready June 1. Free! Free! Free!.  Pick them up at the CLCA Office.
All CLCA owners-drivers of Go-Carts, Snowmobiles, and ATVs are required to register their vehicles and install one flag to each vehicle. Each flag is numbered to clearly identify the owner of the ATV, Snowmobile, or Go-Cart.

Coffee Klatch Continues

Much is consumed but much is not. Leftovers galore. Come and get your sugar and camaraderie highs for the week. Meet your neighbors. Chew the fat or the low carbs. See you there!  Second Tuesday, each month, 9 a.m. at the Rec. Building.  All residents are welcome.

Not Safe? Be Sorry!!!

Government and state statistics reported recently show that the number of people killed or injured using all-terrain vehicles is rising at an alarming rate. Parents of CLCA children should be frightened to learn that the age group which has sustained more serious injury than any other group, are children under 16 years of age. Some consumer advocates are ready to call this increase in injuries and deaths a public health crisis.
Is your loving child riding an unregistered ATV? Is your child discarding his helmet--if she wears one --that you bought to save her life?
Have you talked to the ATV rider in your home about safety and courtesy on the roads of our community, and his? If not, why not?

Mark your  calendar: here’s an opportunity to dispose of all those items we are not permitted to place in the normal compactor.
Even more importantly, it is the culmination of CLCA Pride Week, a chance to put vour outdoor property in shape for the spring and summer seasons.
CLCA will look its best with Christmas decos taken down, accumulated winter (and last fall’s?) debris picked up.
CLCA charges  small fees for using the dumpster to offset the extra cost of having this on-site service.
If you can’t make it to our on-site dumpster, Dingman Township is opening its own Cleanup Day, May 8, 8 am to 1 pm at the Municipal Garage, 118 Fisher Lane. They will take appliances, etc. Fees apply.

Kudos to Easter Egg Hunt Organizers

Sincere thanks to Alllie Ciampoli and her friends and parents for organizing the annual Easter Egg Hunt at Seneca Lake April 4.

In spite of the cold, drizzly weather, Allie’s crew set out 1500 colored eggs in four roped off areas for various aged children  from 0 to 12 to find.  Finding glitter eggs brought special   prizes to the lucky ones.
The found colored plastic eggs were exchanged for —- you guessed it! Candy treats!
The Easter Bunny was on hand to greet all the children ( we hear he had to add some padding to keep warm during the damp chilly day).   A great time was had by all. Thank you, Allie!!

Unlicensed Old Cars Beware— Your Life Is Limited

Residents need to know that having unlicensed autos in driveways and/or parked on CLCA properties is a no-no.  Time to clear them out before they are judged  abandoned  and towed out.

Bats and rabies information
Some time ago, John McCauley, spurred by a family finding of two bats,  gave us some important information.  Concerned about the potential for rabies when the bats were found—one dead, one flying—the entire family was advised to be immunized.  John says he learned only a small percentage of bats carry the rabies pathogen and non-bite occurrences are rare but do happen.  If you find bats in your home, and many of us do and will as the season warms, it’s always a good idea to contact your doctor for advice.

Coffee Klatch Continues

Much is consumed but much is not. Leftovers galore. Come and get your sugar high for the week. See you there!  Second Tuesday, each month, 9 a.m. at the
Rec. Building. All residents are welcome.

Bowling, anyone?

The CLCA Adult Group gets together every other Wednesday to bowl at the Wallenpaupack Bowling Lanes in Hawley, followed by lunch at a local restaurant. The events chased away the winter blues and will continue into the spring and maybe beyond.
Some of the group now have their own shoes and bowling balls...but that is not required. Some come just for the conviviality and to cheer everyone on.

The group leaves the Rec Hall parking lot at 10:30 am, carpooling when possible. If you are interested in this activity or any others for the Adult Group, call Alba, 686-2217, or Lucille, 686-4584.

Go-Cart , ATV Flags Will Be Ready

Seven-inch orange flags have been ordered. All CLCA owners-drivers of Go-Carts, Snowmobiles, and ATVs will be required to register their vehicles and install the flag to the vehicle.  Each flag will have a number; its purpose is to clearly identify the owner of the ATV, Snowmobile, or Go-Cart.  The flag will be free and available at the Office early May.

CLCA's Rules & Regulations -- see Article XII, pp. 12-14 in the Blue-Book --regarding ATVs comply in great measure with the PA All-Terrain Vehicle Law. Of interest is the web address: www.dcnr.state.pa.us/snowmobile.

Transportation Service
Pike County AAA Transportation helps CLCA senior residents in need of a ride in-county or out-of-county for reasonable rates, picking up at your door.  Trips in-county are 75 cents with 50 cents for each stop. Out of county trips are a dollar, again 50 cents for each stop. Honesdale, Scranton, Newton, Stroudsburg, Wilkes-Barre also available. Contact the Senior Center in Blooming Grove for more information: 570-775-5550.

Notes and Noodlings...

The Long Range Planning Committee held a town meeting Saturday, April 17. Residents were invited to list their Peeves and Needs.  The CLCA committee’s efforts are spearheaded by residents, Lisa Napolitano and Richard Calore. Thanks to them. Some say this is the most popular committee with at least 8 folks gathering to plan the town meeting and assess CLCA’s needs.  The Town meeting was being held as this edition of Matters went to press. Watch the Courier, the website and other communication avenues for more information on this important endeavor.

Trees and Stumps and the PA DEP

Many residents have inquired, and have registered dismay, over the tree stumps on the berm of the dam near the tennis courts and the boat dock.

The downing of the trees was not a decision of the Board. The PA DEP required (!) that all trees located on any dam berm be removed, including stumps, and compacted earth replaced in order to prevent a dam breach.  Our stumps will be removed when weather permits.

Sad to admit but esthetics some times takes second place to the protection of the environment. (MS)

Boats, Canoes and Other Watercraft...

It is necessary for all members who have boats stored at the CLCA Boat Dock, to contact -- please-- the Office -- 686-4000 -- for an update on their registration and to claim ownership. We at the Matters have been giving thought to an auction, a contest, a lottery, or even the pillory or an inquisition for all unclaimed boats and their neglectful members. (MS)

Conashaugh Matters

The Conashaugh Intermittent Newsletter

Volume 2, Number 1

 January-February 2004

‘Heaven is Conashaugh Lakes’ —The Wall Street Journal

It has become abundantly clear, as the cliche goes, that Conashaugh Lakes has become Pike County's most desirable private community.

We all have become aware of the worth--in more ways than the economic--of our homes.

And all of us know the reasons: our setting in the midst of bountiful Nature, our few but attractive amenities, our expansive building sites, and our Directors, office and maintenance staff, Courier, Matters, and, most attractive of all, our residents. Kudos to all!

We have just received confirmation of our special place in the sun (the thermometer is now fixed at 3 below zero!) from a recent Wall Street Journal article.

In a misdirected headline, the WSJ proclaimed us--well, not exactly us, but Pike, Monroe, and Wayne counties--as "The three best places to retire that you never heard of."

The competition was mediocre: Biloxi, MS, and Fairfield, CT, the former to gamble in, the latter for those who like to yacht. Of course, the "news" ignores the healthy influx of young families from New York and New Jersey, who have chosen CL to live, to raise

their children, to take their weekend pleasures, and to enjoy the parallel benefits of community and privacy.

In a few short years, we have become the envy of our SR 739 neighbors. Shame then on those who, only a few years ago, had no confidence in the changing Board of Directors and CLCA's competent staff and were fearful of their "investments.” —MS

People ask ‘What’s Happening in Conashaugh?’

The Adult Group held a Christmas party in December  where they snacked on finger foods and yummy desserts.  A gift grab bag followed and proved to be entertaining as well as lots of laughs. The children of the community were not left out as Santa paid a visit to them at their own party.

Our first Potluck Dinner (in a long time) was held Jan. 17 at the Recreation building with close to 30 people in attendance.  Everyone brought their own specialty foods from main dishes to desserts. To help celebrate Al Pollock’s birthday, his wife Betty provided the delicious birthday cake.  The next Potluck Dinner will be Mar. 20, 5:30 p.m.  Deadline for reservations: Mar, 13.

     “What’s coming up?”
Free Pizza and The Lion King Movie (postponed from December 6) will be held Saturday, Jan. 31 at 5 p.m.

The following day, Feb. 1, is our Super Bowl party at 4 p.m. ,Rec Hall. Bring finger foods to munch on.  We’ll probably hang around for a couple hours to eat and to discuss who the winner will be—or even who has the best commercials—and then go home to watch the game.  Some may stay to watch the game on the big TV.  The Coffee Klatch begins anew on Tuesday, Feb.10, at 9 a.m.  Join us in the Rec. Bldg.

The annual Adults Valentine’s Party is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. Bring a dessert and come join the fun.—

SJ at 9 a.m.  Join us in the Rec. Bldg.

Ya’ Gotta Know the Territory   (Meredith Willson, The Music Man,1957)

“A Potluck? A pizza and movie night? Coffee on the 2nd Tuesday of the month? Dancing under the stars? How do I ever find out what's going on? I never was told (heard, read) of these events in Conashaugh for the residents!"

How many times has this refrain been heard in the community, from both old and new residents?

A personal anecdote: In the summer and fall of 1950 I was employed by the United States Smelting, Refining and Mining Co in Fairbanks, Alaska, a frontier town with no sidewalks, itinerant laborers, and lots of gold that wasn't for me to pick up. When the calendar reminded me that it was time to return East, to my second year of college, I hesitated, for I had promised myself to stay until the first snow fell in the mountains. (It came in mid-October.)

Charlie, the mining company's frycook, understood my dilemma but could only offer the following advice: "Kid, it seems to me that you go to college to get your razor sharpened, but they don't hand them out at the door."

Charlie, of course, was speaking of individual effort, assertiveness, inquisitiveness, and the sort of self-reliance that once made Americans the admiration of the world.. How does one find out what is going on in Conashaugh Lakes?

Consider. There is the Courier, with its listing of  forthcoming events.

There is our “Pizza” Bulletin Board, which cannot be avoided by any who check their mailboxes, its large, bold, and black and scarlet letters and numbers proclaiming current events.

There is the Matters, available to the adventurous at two sites, at least, in the community. And there is the CLCA website -- www.conashaughlakes.com-- ably maintained by our President and brought up-to-date when contributions are presented. Surely the CLCA has provided for interested residents as many organs of information as it can.—MS

A Modest Proposal(s)

A few CLCA residents, mostly newbies, carried Holiday cards, thank you notes and invitations around with them for weeks—and may still be carrying them—in hopes they would meet the intended recipients since they didn’t have the mail address. Now isn’t that something?

Something we could do something about, that is. We propose an informal CLCA directory listing name, phone number and mailing and e-mail addresses if participants wish.

We know some “old-timers” are staunchly opposed (not sure if this is a privacy or fear issue). However, this informal directory would be available only to those who participate and would not include anyone who doesn’t agree to be included. So, let us know what you think (email address below).

On another front, several folks have asked if we couldn’t liven up the Welcome “wagon” front with a  basket of goodies donated by local merchants and/or personal visits to new  members.

Again, let us know what you think about this and if you are willing to help. —GW

A HOWLING SUCCESS STORY!!
The Halloween Party in the Rec Bldg held on Halloween Night was a smashing success. 75 children were counted and upwards of 40 adults over the course of the evening. Check out the CLCA website for photos of some of the “monsters” and gremlins that attended.

Hats off to the organizers and bakers and to those who had a party of their own the night before to decorate the interior in scary black!

***Please note that the next event, Dec. 6, Family Pizza/Movie night with “The Lion King,” requires sign-up by Dec. 1 so enough pizza can be ordered. Call the office and let them know how many in your family will attend.

We would like this issue of CM#8 to be our Thanksgiving issue, but with our far-flung travels and our heavy social commitments, its publication before the Great American Turkey Fest is problematic. Nevertheless, in the spirit of the holiday, we would like to give thanks--to the women, men, children and families of Conashaugh Lakes, may they, and all their loved ones--and not so loved ones--benefit from the joys and pleasures of the season. May their lives be filled with love and roses, and their nights with joys and cable. And may they and all of us be inscribed in the Book of Life and health; and, as the Archangel Michael wished for Eve and Adam as they made their courageous way of Eden: "Go on and prosper."

SAVE YOUR 911 SIGN
Protect your 911 sign from the snow plow and the Dingmans Township Sign Police. It must be placed no lower than 4 feet nor higher than 6 feet above road level. Signs must be placed where your driveway meets the road. If you have a circular driveway you must post a sign at the end of each driveway. And allow for the snow plow and the shoulder. A 911 sign is a precious thing to waste.

BE PART OF THE SOLUTIONS!
Board members of Conashaugh Lakes are continually telephoned, berated, accosted, and challenged about dues and expenses, and the imagined tendency of their excessiveness. Where, it is asked, does all the money go? Perhaps frustrations and misrepresentations would cease if some of the complainants would attend once in a while a Board meeting and learn about the needs and expenses of our community.

Item: $18,500 was recently spent for crack-sealing, crack-cleaning, and repairing designated roads before the frost.
Item: A contract with Vector Security for the coming year reflected a 4% increase.

Item: As a result of inspections by the PA Dept. of Environmental Protection, its Bureau of Waterways Engineering, and Division of Dam Safety, it was "suggested" that repairs were absolutely necessary. The Board authorized the sum of $8,500 for dam inspection and inundation mapping.

MORE THINGS THAT ARE NOT HOUSEHOLD GARBAGE
LEAVES LEAVES LEAVES: A NO NO NO

Fallen dead brown leaves ARE NOT Household Trash.
They DO NOT belong in the Compactor, loose or in black trash bags. Those dumping illegally will be fined to the furthest letter of our laws. We know who you are.

Please abide by the Compactor rules or we will lose our contract!!
Just because an item comes from your house that does not make
it garbage! We know you are smarter than that.

Some thoughts are not worth a second thought.
Go figure. But here are some local matters that are worth more than second thoughts and bear repeating.

DON’T PUSH THAT NINE BUTTON ON YOUR PHONE UNLESS…
…unless you know exactly who at the Guest Entrance is asking to be let in to the community. How many times have supposedly friendly voices buzzed our phones, from the front entrance, asking to be let in? “I forgot my gate card”, or “My gate card, I left it in my other car.” If a supposed “friend” calls, if you are not absolutely certain of the voice and identification of your “friend,” do not push the 9! Strangers at the gate have been greatly responsible for the speedsters in our midst, and the vandals on our land. Unless, then, you are certain of the party at the guest entrance who is asking you for a favor and to be let in, for whatever reason, don’t touch number 9. CLCA residents will be held responsible for damages and/or fines that can be levied as a result of this “friendly” gesture. (Repairs are underway at the gates to solve the “free” entry problems).

SAVE YOUR LIMBS…OR: BE READY FOR CLCA SNOW PLOWS!!
We are repeating this: Be advised. Your property frontage lines DO NOT start at the edge of the pavement or shoulder. Minimum road right-of-way from the center line of the road to the edge of the resident's property is from 20 to 25 feet. Protect your shrubbery and/or fencing. Some did not and have lost bushes. Don't be thoughtless and waste your time, efforts and money on landscaping without knowing your property lines. Here’s why: Winter & Snow are around the corner. The road shoulders have to be plowed and the plow cannot stop to measure. Call the office before you plant or build to make certain that you are doing the right thing.

GET READY FOR SPRING ---NOW –( another one well worth repeating!!)

All construction related vehicles (including deliveries) in excess of 10,000 pounds are prohibited from entering CLCA during the 8-week spring thaw—generally mid-Feb. to late April. Depending on the weather, the ban might be imposed or lifted earlier or later in the year. (Check with Office). It shall be unlawful to drive, move, operate a motor vehicle, or combination of motor vehicles, whose total gross weight exceeds 10,000 pounds or over upon any CLCA roads during the above-mentioned period of time. During the spring thaw the management reserves the right to deny access if conditions warrant. The purpose of this regulation is to protect the private roads of CLCA from damage at times when the roads are prone to damage because of weather conditions.

From CLCA PROPERTY IMPROVEMENT & BUILDING CODE, Section100, Article 100, p.2. The regulation will be enforced from February until April. Those whose homes are being built or who are contemplating building this year should inform their builders. Be prepared. Get the units and materials, such as the septic tank, on to the property before the ban takes effect.

More THINGS THAT ARE NOT HOUSEHOLD GARBAGE

After we printed the Top 10 Things not to put in the Trash Compactor,
in the last CM, the following items were found in the compactor.
Please, folks! Use your heads! We could lose the Compactor
if these types of “illegal dumping” continue:

1. Motors and pumps
2. Motor Oil
3. Metal of ANY type
4. Air conditioners, fans, any appliance
5. Kitchen sink – we’re joking, but don’t try it!!
Please use Dumpster Days for these items. Next one: October 18

Trash Compactor Hours
(Household Garbage Only)

Monday to Friday
7:30 am to 10 pm

Holidays and Sat/Sun:
Opens 9 am if attendant present
If no attendant, Noon to 10 pm
Do not leave trash when the compactor area is not open!
Fines up to $500 for violators.

A SAD STATE OF AFFAIRS!! At the Conashaugh Annual Meeting at the end of September a TOTAL of 99 votes were cast out of approximately 665 voters. Where were the rest of you?

SAVE YOUR LIMBS…OR: BE READY FOR CLCA SNOW PLOWS!!

  Correction!!!

As a result of a printing error, we wrote erroneously, incorrectly, and sloppily reported that seven lofty fines "had been levied by the Hearing Committee."  As the CLCA Blue Book clearly states (Article XV,2, R&R, p. 18, 20), the alleged violator can appeal in writing, requesting a hearing, BUT NO FINE OR PENALTY SHALL BE ASSESSED OR IMPOSED BY THE CLCA BOARD OF DIRECTORS UNTIL AFTER THE ALLEGED VIOLATOR SHALL HAVE BEEN GIVEN THE RIGHT TO BE HEARD BY SUCH BOARD OF DIRECTORS OR IT'S [SIC] DESIGNATED REPRESENTATIVE(S). The Hearing Committee, adjudicating the violation, will render its decision. The Hearing Committee's decision shall be final if approved by the Board (p. 20). It must be noted that the fine(s) levied by the Hearing Committee can be accepted, reduced, or increased by the Board of Directors. We apologize for the misrepresentation.

  ATV's*****ATV's***** ATV's ***** ATV's*****

Readers may have noticed, in the security reports, the growing number of violations handed out for residents of varying ages illegally riding ATVs in our community. Some have been ticketed and fined by the Board. Unfortunately violators are an increasing danger to the community and to themselves. We strongly recommend to those parents who "own" children who own ATVs to read carefully and understand fully CLCA's strictures regarding ATVs. These can be found in the Blue Book, CLCA Rules & Regulations, Article XII, page12, 13, and 14. Be prepared, is the Boy Scouts marching song.

SAVE YOUR LIMBS, AND TREES TOO

Be advised. Here's why: Winter & Snow are around the corner. The road shoulders have to be plowed and the plow cannot stop to measure. Call the office before you plant or build to make certain that you are doing the right thing.

 GET READY FOR SPRING ---NOW

All construction related vehicles (including deliveries) in excess of 10,000 pounds are prohibited from entering CLCA during the 8-week spring thaw-generally mid-Feb. to late April.

Security*** Security *** Security ***

JULY: Reckless go-cart driver, no helmet, no safety tag. Dirt bike causing problem with residents. Traffic violations; speeding [we know who you are]. Trash violators. [All the traffic violators, trash violators and speed violators were fined.] Gunshots checked. Teenage boys at the beach, throwing rocks and frightening parents & children. Damage to a vehicle on Oneida Way. AUGUST: A false alarm. Road damage assessment. Trash violators [we know who you are]. Port-a-johns overturned. Reckless driving [we know who you are]. Fireworks violation. Disgusting vandalism at the Rec Bldg & pool. Unattended dog. Nasty teenagers from other communities with fat lips and speeding cars [we know who they are].  While the security reports present a relatively safe and secure Conashaugh Lakes, we bring your attention to the speeding and reckless driving citations and fines. Maybe the indifferent, thoughtless and dangerous speedsters will come to their senses if/when a frightening accident happens. Fines no longer seem to be enough to deter these mindless residents, whether they are parents speeding to get their children to the school busses, or fleeing home after. Or teenagers playing tag. Perhaps it now becomes the responsibility of all of us to follow those we see speeding or who are driving recklessly, get their names, their licenses, and file complaints. It is your life, the lives of your children, your community, folks.

Picnic Time is Noon, August 16... Volunteers?

Gather at the Seneca Lake out front starting at noon, Saturday, August 16 for a feast, fun and fantastic games for all CLCA residents!  This annual affair is renowned for the abundance of food and fine neighbors to meet and mingle with.

Volunteers to set up, cook, clean up, run the games and so on are needed.  The Recreation Committee reports some new folks have volunteered this year and we thank them  in advance.  Now, anyone else?  If you can give some time that day to helping, let Diane or Jen  in the office know your name and phone number!! They’ll pass it on to the organizers.

Weather permitting, the picnic lasts late into the day – or at least until the food runs out! Bring your CLCA member badge. Up to six guests permitted: $5.00 per adult and $3.00 per child. Picnic is free for Members only.

Security, Security, Security  All, Hail Security here at CLCA

It is comforting to record that, once again, our Conashaugh Lakes community was relatively  secure and absent of horrific crime and violent perps during the month of June. The Vector Security personnel reported the following:  a minor domestic disagreement, speeding warnings, one slight one-car accident,  a disagreement between two teen-age boys at the pool, multiple trash violations, vandalism ( Porto Potties turned over), and one shockingly inhumane treatment of a pet dog. The ASPCA stepped into that last one and levied some huge fines!!

Will the last honest man or Woman turn off the lights?

“Go West, Young Man!" Here we thought that the crowds of families fleeing New Jersey to settle in our fair community were relocating for the acreage, greenery, fresh air, a private zoo, and our gracious neighbors.  But there may be another reason: law and order.

Here is a review of crime and punishment in The Garden State (The Felon State?), courtesy of The Economist. Martin Barnes, the former mayor of Patterson, was sentenced to three years in prison for accepting more than $200,000 in bribes.  He was also fined $1,000 for accepting cash, a swimming pool and the favors of a young  lady, all provided by thoughtful city contractors. Milton Milan, ex-mayor of Camden, is currently serving a seven-year sentence for a litany of crimes.  Sara Bost has pleaded guilty to witness tampering. Kenneth Saunders, a former mayor of Asbury Park, was charged with conspiracy and bribery.  A former Newark mayor pleaded guilty to tax evasion last autumn. The political boss of one New Jersey county was recently indicted on 20 counts of extortion, fraud and conspiracy. A Hudson County official was charged with bribery, but he has bizarrely disappeared into the witness-protection program.  Keep tuned; where there is fire, there is more fire.

ANNUAL CLCA MEETING:    9 A.M. , SEPTEMBER 27, 2003

BLOOMING GROVE FIREHOUSE, ROUTE 739 NORTH

Watch for your Conashaugh Courier containing official meeting materials

 Congratulations to the 50+ Club:

The new 50+ Club has met twice (and maybe again by the time you read this) and is off and running. We hear they asked the board about some Pool time for Aqua-cise sessions (approved).  Thanks to the organizers, Alba Davidson and Lucille Mahon (686-4584).  Keep reading the “pizza” bulletin board for new dates and activities. They expect the next meeting to be pool-side.

Adult Exercise Classes -- Encore Wanted!!

New resident Betty Pollock brought some activity to the Recreation Building in July and we hope she’ll continue.  Two Adult Exercise classes were offered by Betty free of charge to CLCA residents and were well-attended.  Thank you, Betty, for sharing your expertise.  We could not reach her at press time to determine if the classes will be offered again but we hope so! If you are interested and were not able to participate last month, let the office staff know with a phone call or a visit.  After all, those holidays and winter months are approaching and who couldn’t use a little stretching?

New play group for Tots and Moms

A play group for moms and young children ages one to five has been organized at St. Vincent's Church for the coming academic year, Sept '03 to June '04. It will meet on Weds and Thurs, 9:30 to 11 a.m. The cost is $15 for one day, $20 for both days. Events planned are Circle Time, Learning Time, Snack Time, Songs, Puzzles, Crafts, Stories, & Trips.  Activities begin Sept 10. For more information please call: Kim Wittekind, 686-3288; Val Borches, 686-5612, or Donna Pittuch, 775-6710.

 It Bears Repeating...

We hate like heck to keep repeating ourselves but the Garbage/Compactor situation needs continued attention. The Board is taking the hard-line on offenders of the Trash Disposal Rules. Seven hefty fines levied last month by the Hearing Committee and about seven more hearings are slated this month.  A new sign at the Compactor area spells out the rules. Excuses like my guest or my child “didn’t know” just won’t cut it anymore. As a community, CLCA pays the price when folks don’t live by the rules. (Hours are listed on the front of this Matters issue). Here’s the deal: If we don’t live up to our community rules about trash, the trash hauler fines us for non-household garbage in the compactor. He’s up against tight rules himself with no more landfills in PA.. If we are fined too often, we could lose the contract.  Then we will each have to pay upwards of $300 a year to have ONE (repeat ONE) bag per week picked up at our homes. It’s not worth it folks! We have a fine service here. Let's keep it by following  the rules

No More tents

Recent rules amendments by the Board of Directors will preclude the addition of any more of those tent-like structures that were never meant to be permanent.  Existing ones may not be replaced or repaired. New ones may be put up only for a special occasion such as a party or special event of a day or two.

 The Blue Book---Read it!

Yeah, we know: Rules, rules, rules… But the Blue Rules and Regulations book for CLCA is an important document that helps us maintain  the quality of our community life here. (If you want a purple house, this is not the place to live.)

Newcomers read them and  are required to abide by them. Old-timers need to refresh their memories of the rules once in a while when it comes to decisions about where to place a dog pen or what types and colors  of house paint or fencing are permitted.

And, if you don’t like the rules, visit a Board meeting to ask for a change…suggestions are welcome.

Oct. 18:  Autumn Dumpster Day

WELCOME BACK SUMMER!  POOL OPENING NEWS …

The Pool Manager this year is Jamie McKnight. Jamie is a familiar face here, having been a lifeguard for the past six years at our pool.  Her enthusiasm is welcome and we look forward to seeing her. Now, as to just when the pool opens:  With the uncooperative weather and maintenance to be done, the target date is June 21, maybe earlier if the weather cooperates.

SOME IMPORTANT POINTS:

BADGES: You need to update all badges for your family and guests for 2003. If you are in good standing with your dues or other financial obligations, please visit the CLCA office and obtain 2003 stickers for your badge. If you are new to the community or your children had their picture taken more than 3 years ago, you need to call the office (696-4000) and make an appointment to have a photo taken and a new badge issued. POOL HOURS:  Noon to 6 p.m., extended beyond 6 depending on the heat and weather during the summer. Look for the yellow flag to be hoisted as the later hours signal.

SECURITY AT HOME – AND WE MEAN HERE AT CLCA

When Mayor Giuliani set about improving the quality of life for New York City residents, he set his sights on the small, petty crimes and offenses that just didn't want to go away. Guess what? They did go away--for the most part.

There's a lesson here for CLCA. Given the pacific, orderly, and law-abiding residents of our Conashaugh Lakes community, the monthly Security Reports generally make for dull and uninteresting reading: However, we do have: Unlicensed kids racing and speeding in parents' cars and abusing security officers. Dogs off leash or incessantly barking. Gate card malfunctions. Loud music after midnight. Trash, trash, and more trash. And of course, sheet rock and construction materials, again, in the dumpster. But with our new. clear color cameras recording the trash miscreants, stiff fines have been collected and, we hope, a learning experience has been undergone by the guilty. But, as the community grows, we can expect, given human nature, violations to increase. Thus it becomes every one of us to make that extra effort to abide by the necessary rules and regulations of our community, respect our neighbors, and thus respect ourselves.

 NEW! THE MOUNTAIN LAUREL CENTER

The Mountain Laurel Center for the Performing Arts, located down the road in Bushkill, plans it’s eagerly awaited opening June 14. Advertised performers are Linda Lavin, Dick Hyman, and Cy Coleman, who, with others, are to perform in the newly renovated boathouse that overlooks an 85-acre lake. Its brochure promises much: education, the environment and the arts in all its forms: music, drama, dance, fine arts, photography, crafts, and literature. An inexpensive annual membership -- at $50 a bargain -- offers members advance purchase of tickets for selected shows, advance notification of upcoming events, the Center's e-mail newsletter, and a listing in the Center's program book. But no reserved parking space! For information: PO Box G, Bushkill Falls Road, Bushkill, PA 18324.  Or: www.mountainlaurelcenter.org.  Or: 1-866-458-86512.

 DRY WELL?

Maybe not this rainy year, but: If your well went dry last year, the United States Geological Survey wants to know about it.

Specifically, the USGS wants to know about homeowners whose wells were affected by last year's drought. The problems include water from your well turning color, turning bad in taste, taking on an odor or running out and forcing the drilling of a new well.

If you want to know more about their data collection or provide your own details, write: USGS, Attn: Curtis Schreffler, 215 Limekiln Road, New Cumberland, PA 17070-2424.

Committees generally meet on the first Saturday Communications and Finance of each the month. Recreation, Rules & Regs., Security & Designed & Review meet on the third Saturday. Board meetings start at 10 am on the second Saturday of each month in the Recreation Building.

Kudos! Kudos! Kudos!

Thanks to the volunteers from the Board and residents who helped make Dumpster Day in May a success and easy experience.

They gave up their Saturday (and worked in the rain!) so we could all have fresher home surroundings minus the accumulation of winter debris from re-decorating, renovating or just plain wearing out!  Thank You!

THIS IS GARBAGE- PLEASE READ

New compactor hours are in effect for weekends:  9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Please say hello to Jason who will work weekends to assist community members with trash.  Weekdays continue at 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Why these times?  These are the hours staff is available to process the compactor.  Debris cannot be allowed to pile up at the compactor site (we are not inviting the bears and other wildlife to lunch) and it must be "cranked" once in a while to keep the household trash inside the compactor.

Also, please note that only household trash is permitted in the compactor-NO bed frames, curtain rods or blinds, building materials, etc.  We hold Dumpster Clean Up Days for that sort of stuff...We just have to find a place on our own properties to hide it until the next Dumpster Day.

Why the limit to household garbage? Our trash contract has our trash going directly to the landfill and not to a transfer station.  Therefore household trash should only be put into the compactor.  If the landfill finds items they will not take we must go and pick up the items or we could lose our contract. Trash from the clean up day will go to a transfer station and possibly sorted at the station and wanted items will be process for recycling or what ever.

Different costs, and what will be accepted come into play and disposal of the trash day trash costs more than standard household trash.  That is why so much effort is being put into effect to protect our trash contract. There is still much concern about outside trash coming into the Association and efforts may need to be taken to control who puts trash in our compactor.  If the situation does not improve we may have to set times for depositing trash on assigned days and evenings. The dumpster is not a right; it is provided to members in good standing and is not an open invitation to the friends of the world to come on down to Conashaugh.  Keep it clean and abide by the hours! Thanks.

WHILE WE ARE ON THE SUBJECT

Our beautiful roadsides need careful tending-please pick up those bottles and etc. while you walk your dog or yourself. Like the crews that clean Route 739, our roads can stand a pick-me-up now and then. And, please encourage teens and workmen NOT to throw their "stuff" out the car or truck window!

DINGMAN TOWNSHIP ORDINANCE 06-93

In the interests of safety, economics, neighborliness and aesthetics, we bring to the attention of automobile and truck owners of Conashaugh Lakes the Dingman Township Ordinance 06-93: Ordinance Prohibiting The Abandonment Of Vehicles. In a word, it is forbidden. The Ordinance embraces completely intact, partially dismantled, inoperative, wrecked or junked vehicles. A vehicle shall be considered abandoned on Township property if it has not had a valid inspection sticker for a period of more than six (6) months. Inoperative vehicles on Township property, after a period of fifteen (days) written notice from the Township, shall be removed. Impoundment and storage are expensive. A Word to the Wise.

FAIR WARNING: It has been the hope of the writes of this Conashaugh Intermittent Newsletter that contributions, suggestions and responses would be forthcoming from eager readers. We had expected a deluge of poems, essays, criticism and diatribes, even stimulating personal reminiscences like the old Readers’ Digest.   From the first issue in January we had warned the office of swamping calls and letters indicating community interests, concerns, and questions, even frustrations. So far? Silence.  We gladly would publish commentary on America’s health crisis, bear recipes, West Nile Virus, road rage, income inequality, famous folk living in our midst…Not a word.  Conashaugh Matters was never meant to be an ego trip for frustrated novelists. We envisioned a COMMUNITY NEWS LETTER of human interest, of value and interest to the community. Is it? Should it? What can be done? You know where to find us.

 AVE ATQUE VALE, ERIN!

Ave atque vale, Erin!  That is, Hail and Farewell to Erin Henry!

For fourteen years, since her move to Conashaugh Lakes with her family in 1989, Erin Henry has been the Volunteer of all Volunteers in our CLCA community.  While a fifth grader, Erin served as our waitress at CLCA's Steak Nights, Ice Cream Socials, and Sunday Breakfasts -- all eagerly awaited and thronged by CLCA residents.  She was there at CLCA parties, coloring posters, educating younger children, planning, helping, and serving whenever and wherever she could to make herself useful.

She was there--at the crack of CLCA's dawn--at our summer picnics, organizing, babysitting with discipline and tact, inviting in all CLCA families and guests with warmth and smiles, leaving her post only to run the family games later in the day. She organized the Baby Sitting Group at the Rec Building when earlier Annual Meetings were held there, and she was there serving the needs of famished homeowners who filled the Conashaugh Cafe when it was up and running.

The 2003 CLCA Easter Egg Hunt on April 12 --her fourth--is the culmination of a young and rich life of responsibility, hospitality, volunteerism, and neighborliness. And, never let it go unnoticed, these thirteen years of CLCA activities have gone, hand in hand, year by year, with wondrous achievements in her academic life.  She graduates in the top 1% of her graduating class at DVHS, and, fulfilling the image of the well-rounded American youth, she has lettered in 3 sports, garnering a total of 9 Varsity letters.

Erin Henry, soon off to college, leaves behind a record of participation and achievement that is second to none. For all her good deeds, all of us at CLCA thank her.  We wish her well.  We glory in what she has made of her young life, and for the joys she has given to all of us at CLCA. We wish for her a thrilling future of added accomplishments and continued successes. We say, as the Archangel Michael said to Eve and her consort as they entered the wide human world before them, GO ON AND PROSPER.

 SCHOLARS, SCHOLARSHIP & LEARNING

Who was it who said that Economics or Mathematics-or even Computers-was "the dismal science"?  He (she?) obviously knew nothing at all about the research of a professor of mathematics in Australia. He considered the bracing question: How many ways are there to lace a shoe?  You would never guess.

A shoe with two rows of six eyelets offers 43,200 different paths to the shoe lacer. But each eyelet must contribute to the essential purpose of pulling the two halves of the shoe together. (More precisely, this condition says the shoelace is not allowed to pass in a straight line through three consecutive eyelets on the same flap. Get it?)

But there is hope for mankind. The scientist showed that the two common lacings of human beings who still lace are the strongest. How do you explain science to your kid who uses Velcro?

CLCA AND SECURITY MATTERS

The Vector Security reports for the month of February 2003 make for exciting and secure reading (Vector Security is now the name of the former Triple AAA security company).  Sgt. Hall continues to do a fine job of policing our roads and homes and, despite some ugly words and uglier faces from rule and law breakers-most of whom do not live in the community-maintaining the safety of CLCA residents.

Many parking violators have been cited due to the incessant snowfalls, with nearly all of them  given "Warnings".  Visiting ambulances needed his aid.  Dogs were lost-and found. Concerned sons and daughters called about their elderly parents. He reassured them about the parents' safety, in one difficult situation coming to the aid of a shut-out mother on a cold and windy day.

He also handled family entanglements with courtesy and understanding.

He surely doesn't deserve the curse words and misdirected anger of those  who enter our lands when the gates are broken or when some resident thinks he is helping outsiders invade the community unlawfully.

He deserves the continued support and help from us all. Good for you, Sgt. Hall, and your colleagues.

MEET & GREET-- AND COFFEE TREATS

Belatedly, we issue the second Conashaugh Matters of 2003.  Manny factors have caused its delay: weather, sickness and health, weather, war and peace and the weather. We apologize to the hundreds of thrilled residents who have, by voice, email, phone and gossip, supported our endeavors to bring matters of significance to all our reading public.

 GOOD NEWS FIRST!!!

Our CLCA Finance Director and Budget Watcher, Craig Henry, presented some good news at the CLCA Board meeting in February. For the first four months of the 2002-2003, some 60% of the dues from homeowners, lot owners and contiguous lots has been collected.  Those on payment plans and those few who have not yet paid this year's dues, please send in your money to help CLCA reach the top of the current budget line.

The complete Treasurer's Report month by month is available at the CLCA office to all residents in good standing.  These exciting documents reveal the financial care, conservatism and awesome responsibilities as your 2003 Board spends our monies.

 BUT THEN THERE IS...

Once again, despite voluminous broadcasting to all, the free, free, free CLCA Movie Day in February, organized by your Recreation Committee, was a bust. Despite the strenuous efforts of Carmen Cruz and John McCauley, only two children and a parent appeared to enjoy refreshments and entertainments.   Why?  Time? Day? Hour?  The Movies? Weather?  Drop an email or note and let us know. The Board has considered discontinuing the monthly Free Movies. Folks, it is up to you to consider what entertainment you want for the CLCA children. Positive suggestions and thoughtful commentary will be heard! Speak up!

 TRASH COMPACTOR HOURS

The compactor area is open to receive your household garbage on school days  7 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on Saturday and Sundays from noon to 10 p.m.  Please do NOT drop your non-CLCA neighbor's garbage or let your non-CLCA friend drop their garbage in the CLCA compactor. And NO garbage of any sort should be left outside the area. Not only is it unsightly and unneighborly, the trash attracts rodents and other undesirables. Heavy fines have been and will be levied on violators.

 COMING UP and UPCOMING

See the dates listed on the left. Note particularly the annual Flea Markets. And, the Dumpster Days are slated for that extra debris we all accumulate and can not put in the compactor weekly.

HELP WANTED!

The CLCA Annual Picnic Extravaganza will be Saturday, August 16.

The picnic needs a goodly crew, now, to help with the many efforts required to make it a joyous culinary and happy occasion. More residents are needed to set up, cook, serve and clean up.

Volunteering before the event helps to make the food taste better and the games more enjoyable.

Leave your name and phone # at the CLCA Office if you will help this year.

DO YOU KNOW WHO YOUR CHILDREN ARE...

The question is: Do you know who your children are letting in the gate when your phone rings?  Or better, do you know who you are letting in when you buzz an auto in the gates?  Yes, we know, the gates were broken due to the weather for some days this winter but we still need to exercise caution.

There have been reports of wandering salesmen and others trying to sell meat or other items door-to-door. They may claim to have sold to your neighbor but probably did not. Someone let them in the gate who was not a customer. We have heard that some children simply buzz in anyone who calls their home from the gate.

If a stranger knocks on your door, call the office immediately!

WHO IS THAT IN THE RED TRUCK?

We all need to give special thanks and praise to Dave and his crew, Don and Jordan, who have been seen more than usual this winter.  They are the reason our roads have been cleared of the tons of snow we have been blessed with this winter.  Say thanks to them the next time you are near the Maintenance Sheds. They deserve it.

STILL WELCOME: PHOTOS OF CONASHAUGH LAKES

The Conashaugh Lakes Community Association Website is being reviewed, updated and refreshed.  John Crerand, President, continues to seek a few good photos of beautiful Conashaugh Lakes (www.ConashaughLakes.com). Kudos for Committees

It gives pleasure always to give credit where great credit is due. At the October 12th Board meeting, the Design/Review Committee, chaired by Fred Kline, the members Marie Caffery and Dick Weifert, presented a clear and thorough study of construction in CLCA from Oct. 2001 to Aug 2002. At a glance we see the community’s explosive growth in the past 11 months. It is clear and compelling vote of confidence in our community. Twelve additions have gone up, some sunrooms and some screen rooms. New garages are noted. Seven fences and one ground pool have been constructed. Noted also were the Denials, indicating the Design/Review committee is fulfilling its awesome responsibilities to keep our community on tract.

DISAPPOINTING TURNOUT FOR

KID EVENTS

CLCA’s Recreation Committees, at the urging of many parents, organized its first winter entertainment extravaganza for the children. On Saturday, Dec 7, what was to be the first monthly event-FREE FREE FREE– the committee slated cartoons for the very young, movies for pre-teens and Spiderman for teens. For one long afternoon, Nancy Sanchez and Carmen Cruz sat in the Rec. Building surrounded by pretzels, popcorn, balloons, soda and punch. One–only one child appeared. Sadly, it is the latest manifestation diminishing participation in CLCA activities. Yes, it was cold (outside), the sun did not shine, the wind blew, pre-holiday shopping drew many to the malls, and Gramma came to visit. The Recreation committee will try again on January 4th so mark your calendar and come on down to the Rec. Building!!

THE UPSHOTS

Recreation and all committees need your input… your positive input. Suggestions are welcome substitutes for complaints too easily voiced. What events would you like to see? Contact any committee liaisons listed above.

DOGGIE JAIL

On the Bad News front, the board has been struggling with how to deal with loose dogs. Not everyone is at ease with a dog on the romp off the leash and, not all the roaming dogs are Conashaugh residents.

CLCA’s current fines are $10.00 up to $100.00 per incident and is not solving the problem.

Under consideration. At the suggestion of the Animal Warden, is a doggie jail for strays with an additional $100.00 pick-up fine imposed.

If the dog is not picked up within 24 hours the dog warden will be called and pick up the dog and take the dog to a holding facility of their choice.

A copy of the Pennsylvania Dog Laws is available at the CLCA Office.

CLCA Rules are in the BLUE BOOK page 9 Article VIII and under the Pet Rule Violation page 20.

MORE GOOD NEWS!!! WE'RE IN THE BLACK!! The good news shared by the Board and the CLCA accountant at the December Board meeting: CLCA ended its 2002 fiscal year in the black and without needing any loans to help us into the New Year. This is due to: collections of back dues, sales of properties owned by the Association and all of those who have paid their 2003 dues on time! Great job, everyone!

WHY LORDS VALLEY?

(From the Hemlock Farms Sales Agency booklet)

In 1809, Levi Lord along with his son, Simeon, and twelve associates from England, came to this region in hopes of purchasing a land tract from Dr. Phillip Myddleton. Discovering some title problem, the entire group except for Lord decided to purchase elsewhere. In 1810, Lord procured a valid title and the property became part of Blooming Grove Township.

The Lords of Liverpool made their first home in the cabin of Sam Helm, a noted woodsman who "squatted" on the land. Helm acknowledged Lord’s claim to the property and offered it to him, and in the same gentlemanly spirit, Lord is said to have paid Helm for his improvements.

The Lords began to make their living in the abundant timber. In response to traffic in the areas, Simeon Lord build a hotel in 1850. (The Lord House is today a Pike County Historic Site as well as a State Historical site.) In the early part of the 20th century, Sim Lord Jr., son of Simeon Lord and grandson of Levi Ford, managed the hotel and sold gasoline. The Lords Valley Post Office also operated out of the Lord House until 1955 when the Hawley Post Office assumed its responsibilities. (The Lord House is the old red brick house located on Rt. 739 across from 84 Lumber.)

ANYONE HAVE PHOTOS OF CONASHAUGH LAKES?

The Conashaugh Lakes Community Association Website is being reviewed, updated, and refreshed. John Crerand, President, is looking for a few good photos of beautiful Conashaugh Lakes, and, possibly of the annual picnic. Any photo, any date, is acceptable, as long as they reveal the seasonal beauty of our community. www.ConashaughLakes.com
